MEETING MINUTES

  • Approval of Minutes for previous meeting- Bri Swope moves to approve, Elizabeth Wallace seconds the motion. All in favor of approval of previous meeting minutes.

Announcements / Updates:

  • RECAPS & KUDOS
    • IT Accessibility Liaisons inaugural meeting – January 19, reconvened IT Accessiblity Standards Committee. Policy to provide technical advice to ADA coordinator in relation to accessibility complaint in addition to
      • Convened as a superset of the committee. Recruiting accessibility liaisons for work groups (voluntary). Groups are welcome to volunteer as point person who is familiar with inner workings of administrative. Trainings, accessibility meetings, external resources additionally be created.
      • First modules will be live on 2/2/2022. T.M. Weissenberger will send the modules to those interested.

    • President Wilson’s acknowledgment letters sent to supervisors re: release time to people participating in CDA (Do you need one?) – contact David Rooney and Patti Bahr if you’d like to receive a letter.

Tiffani Stevenson Early: President Wilson is very genuine and an advocate for DEI work.

  • Judy Huemann Visit Confirmed:
    • March 29 Filmscene showing of Crip Camp, reception, Q&A and book signing
    • March 30 Hancher Fireside Chat with Judy Heumann Senator Harkin has confirmed attendance – Bri will share information to members regarding
    • Adaptive Sport Day will be April 1. More information will be coming as well. Adaptive Sport Iowa will collaborate with UI Therapeutic Recreation Department to host.  Community, Faculty and Student involvement is encouraged and invited to attend and participate.
  • If you want to be added to CDA.org.uiowa.edu contact Jen Knights
  • Jen Knights will be the faculty advisor for the UISDAA student organization.
  • Contacts with DEI initiatives:
    • DEI Committee for Staff Council – Teri Schnelle (DSL)
      • If interested in joining, email Teri Schnelle 
      • If there are things that CDA can do in relation to Staff Council, email Patti Bahr and/or David Rooney
    • DEI Resources is now Inclusive Education and Strategic Initiatives (IESI)
      • Dr. Erin Stresow is our Liaison- role is to advocate and support councils. Examples of the work within her role include creating fact sheets of information about the various councils on campus as well as supporting website information.
      • They helped with one-page handouts for Pres Wilson – they were helpful enough that we may want to expand their use.
    • Center for DEI is now Center for Inclusive Academic Excellence (CIAE)
      • Please share information regarding name change with contacts
  • Diversity and Disability Fellowships – 3 chosen (Patti)         
    • 3 fellows have started within the last few weeks. Amber Alaniz is one of those fellows!
  • Undergrad Research Fellowship – Asset Mapping in Spring – student beginning (David)
    • Requests to CDA
    • Casey Wilkenson is the new fellow and is working on campus asset mapping.
    • Casey may be reaching out for accessibility needs and to share information about the website
    • David talked with VP of Research – could register on their website that we are liaisons. The website is:
      • Networking tool for connecting with other people on campus
      • UDL, accessibility, and more
      • Could Bri’s students help?
  • Funding and/or committee help for Disability Graduation (Affinity ceremony)
    • In the past we’ve talked at the last minute about spending funds
    • $875 to spend
    • Request for help on this project. Others on campus are already meeting about this. Contact David if you want to help with this initiative.
  • Presentation to Libraries, March 9  (Brad & Patti)
    • Audience: Staff development and diversity team – mission is to expand awareness of diversity issues and awareness of faculty initiatives and more
      • focus library staff
      • history, impact, mission, upcoming events
  • Elizabeth is creating a new website for the Stanley Museum of Art
    • She has 100 images
      • Should Alt text be short or long? – I.e. Mattise white horse on blue background – how should it be described?
        • She gave Mike Hoenig short and long descriptions and it was clear that the long descriptions were preferred.
      • How can she include the longer ones on the website?
      • She’s found someone who will do 75-word descriptions for $100.
      • Should she record and have them included online?
      • They will have QR codes for story dots to send to website when you are at the museum but what about the website?
      • She wants to make the museum website a model for university educational art museums
        • Are there grant opportunities to get these word descriptions?
          • Vast majority is abstract
          • If extended descriptions how far do you go with interpretation?
        • Iowa Digital Library
      • This is an issue across campus
      • What are the guidelines for this?
        • Which pronoun?
        • Do you give names?
  • Could the Inclusive Events Guide help to inform us how to do this?
    • Erin says that they are utilizing some best practice at some of the galleries
    • Dossin have some guidelines
    • How should they make the guide inclusive?

Discussion:

  • UI to Embark on 10-Year Facilities Master Plan – what can be our role?
    • Accessibility work that Michael Penniman has already done with Facilities
    • Bri has been involved with the inaccessibility of the Field House
    • Ryan Dehart will be involved at some point to ensure that accessibility is included
      • Will it be only new construction or existing renovations? (I.e. Halsey Building, Field House and other modifications)
    • How could we provide support?
    • Maybe we should see who is involved?
    • Michael Penniman could be a resource (like what was done at Art Museum)
      • They were able to write a grant to make things accessible

  • Bri’s Ideas and updates and CDA’s involvement?
    • Disability Studies
    • Annual Symposium
    • Students sharing projects
